Silver value formula

Value = weight (g) × purity ÷ 31.1035 × spot ($/ozt)

Avoirdupois vs troy ounce warning

Kitchen scales measure avoirdupois ounces (28.3495 g). Silver spot is quoted per troy ounce (31.1035 g). If you use a kitchen scale showing ounces, enter the reading in the "Avoirdupois oz" unit option — the calculator applies the correct conversion. Using troy oz when you have avoirdupois oz overstates results by ~9%.

Frequently asked questions

What is a troy ounce?+

A troy ounce is the standard weight unit for precious metals. 1 troy oz = 31.1035 grams. It is heavier than an avoirdupois ounce (28.3495 g). All silver and gold spot prices are quoted per troy ounce.

What does 1 oz of silver mean on a silver round?+

On a silver round or bar, "1 oz" means 1 troy oz (31.1035 g) of fine silver (.999 purity), unless otherwise stated. This is true for American Silver Eagles, Silver Maples, and most generic rounds.

Can I use avoirdupois ounces (like a kitchen scale)?+

Yes, but convert first: 1 avoirdupois oz = 0.9115 troy oz. Using avoirdupois without conversion will understate the result by about 9%.

What purity are most silver bars?+

Most modern silver bars and rounds are .999 fine silver (99.9%). Some older bars are .925 sterling. Check the stamped purity before entering.
