Editorial Policy
Independence
CoinMelt has no commercial relationship with any coin dealer, precious metals buyer, refiner, or bullion broker. We do not accept sponsored content, affiliate fees from dealers, or payments for calculator placement. Our revenue comes from display advertising (Journey by Mediavine).
We do not recommend specific dealers or buyers. When guides discuss where to sell silver or gold, we describe how to evaluate offers and what questions to ask — we do not direct readers to any specific company.
Sourcing standards
Coin specifications come from primary sources only — US Mint publications, official Coinage Act texts, and issuing mint specifications for foreign coins. We record the source URL for every coin in our dataset. Where we derive a value from primary data (e.g., computing troy oz from grams and fineness), we document the derivation.
We do not use aggregator sites, Wikipedia, or unofficial sources as primary references for coin specifications or melt formulas. If we cannot verify a figure from a primary source, we do not publish it.
AI-assistance disclosure
CoinMelt content is researched and written with the assistance of large language models (LLMs). AI is used for drafting, structuring, and editing. All coin data, formulas, and calculations are verified against the primary sources listed above. Worked examples in calculator explainers are generated using the same functions that power the calculators, so they always match.
We believe AI-assisted content can be accurate and useful when subject to proper verification. We do not pass off AI output as human-written. Any content that cannot be verified is not published.
Corrections policy
If you find an error — in a coin specification, formula, or melt value — please email hello@coinmelt.com with the specific coin or calculator and the correct figure with its source. We investigate all corrections and update the site promptly when an error is confirmed. We do not delete corrected content; we update it in place.
Disclaimer
Melt value calculators provide estimates for informational purposes. They are not investment advice. We are not registered investment advisors. Precious metals prices are volatile — past melt values do not predict future prices. Always get multiple quotes from dealers before any transaction.
US Mint regulation 31 CFR Part 82 prohibits melting or treating as a commodity 1-cent and 5-cent US coins. Our penny and nickel calculators are informational tools only and are not intended to facilitate any action that violates this regulation.
